crystallize

"Stop teasing him so much," Yunho sighs when he hears the soft click of the door on Junsu's way out, curling his fingers around the remote so that he can turn off the tv. "You're supposed to build relationships here, not resentment."

“Don’t worry,” Jaejoong grins back at him, eyes sparkling like water, still riding on the high after putting him down. “It’s Junsu,” he rationalizes, as if that should douse his concern. “He can take it.” Chapter closed. He reaches out for the remote, intent on continuing with the variety program he was watching, and Yunho’s brows furrow as he holds it out of reach.

“Just because he can,” he tells him, stressing each word so that he can see the depth behind them, “doesn’t mean that he should.”

But Jaejoong’s focus has already been redirected to pushing him back onto the cushions and climbing over his limbs to get at the remote. He treats it all like it is a game, and it kneads his limbs and his heart into a knot in the process. Yoochun is no help either, just stretches his toes as he leans back and teases him for being so protective, and Changmin hums his agreement even with his sight still glued to his phone, thumbs moving across the keypad at a blistering pace.

Yunho watches as life unfolds before him, and as he breathes in the sheer familiarity of it all, he wonders how far they are from reaching a tipping point.

He bites his lips and tries to swallow down the worry, pacing across cold tiles as he listens to the mocking ringtone. Junsu didn’t tell them where he was headed, and Yunho never got the chance to ask. It is almost midnight. “I don’t see why you care so much,” Changmin yawns as he pulls open the refrigerator door, scratching at his belly as he scans for leftovers. “We don’t have a schedule tomorrow.”

Yunho wishes that they could see the insides of his heart, could read the thoughts as they rush through thousands of pathways, all connected by one singular harmony made from five distinct voices, each as precious to him as the other - but then there is Changmin with his condescending jibes, Yoochun and his loveless flirtations, and Jaejoong pushing past the limits just to see how far he can go. In turn, Junsu wraps those high-pitched ‘eu kyang kyang’s around him like a shield, a wall he created when he stepped into the field, that has been expanding - higher and farther and stronger around himself – that over time, has become more impenetrable than diamond. They mock his transparency and praise his thick skin, but that isn’t all there is to it. At the end of the day, Junsu doesn’t consider them close enough to hurt.

Junsu doesn’t care, and Yunho hurts at just the thought.

Sometimes, he wants to break down the walls and look into his eyes, wants to anchor him close to keep him from drifting away. But they stand at opposite ends of the line, and he can’t reach out that far without stepping out of place. So when the words fall like hail into still water, they create ripples – violent – and instead of fighting the current, Junsu goes off in search of safer docks.

Yunho reaches him on his second try, when Changmin is sprawled across the living room sofa with a bowl of cereal resting on the coffee table, mumbling to Yoochun about the actress who played the lead role in this movie and how he once met her on set for that variety show back in June. Hey, he breathes with relief when he hears the familiar husky voice seep through the line. Where are you? Oh, with Hyukjae? Tell him I said hi.

He pours the water into a mug, lowering himself onto the kitchen chair.

Come home soon?

Jaejoong sneaks up behind him with a mischievous grin, holding up a hoodie in one hand and a hat in another as he shoves them in his arms and tells him that they’re going out drinking.

The thing with Jaejoong is that he lives in a different world, with his head up in the clouds, and he needs a pillar of support - Yunho - to be his grounding force or else he is sure to trip and fall. Jaejoong calls Yunho his other half, and with that earnest look in his eyes, there is no question about the fact that he means it.

Junsu is different. Though his mind tends to wander off on its own as well, he has always been self-assured and self-sufficient, and he has never needed - never wanted anyone more than maybe his hyung and maybe his best friend. Junsu gets along with Yunho fine, loves spending time with him, but that isn't the same thing - not when he can just as easily keep his balance without him, when everyone else is really just holding him down.

Yunho sighs and shrugs on the warmth, picks up his keys and follows Jaejoong out, resigns himself to a life of forever staying lost between the boundary of what is and what if.

Yoochun likes to keep the windows open at night, likes to light up a cigarette and stare at the moon, says it gives him inspiration, that with the wind on his skin, he doesn’t feel as trapped as he really is.

Yunho shivers underneath the blankets, falls asleep counting the seconds from the earth to the stars, dreams of a time spent sleeping on subway floors and reaching for the sky, when Junsu twined his fingers in his and led him to his home, told him that this is real and this is now, and if today is bad then tomorrow will be better, but only if he steels his heart and tries his best, because everyone will try to bring him down, but Junsu - Junsu knows that he can fly.

He dreams of his smile and he dreams of his laugh, of lips - soft, pink, satin - taunting him like a whispered confession not meant for him to hear. He dreams of tasting sin, so hot and so painful that he cannot keep it down no matter how badly he wants to – throws it back up like acid, leaving behind a charred throat and tears in his eyes so thick that he can’t see where he is flying anymore.

He dreams of falling.

The concert is coming up, and there is a constant pitter patter in his chest that doesn’t seem to slow itself down. He wants to call it stress, but the name doesn’t fit the feeling, is more like squeezing a square into a circle, and it fills up his heart and his lungs to the point that they surrender to gravity and sink to his stomach. Junsu pauses mid-motion to face him. “Hey hyung,” he calls out over the dance track, and Yunho can’t help but stare at his smile, blinded.

Junsu pauses the music, head still bopping to imagined echoes of the beat that he was dancing to. “Did you want something?” he looks up expectantly, shrugging off his shirt to fan himself with it, and Yunho feels suffocated when he sees pale skin stretch over taut muscles, a pale bruise highlight the hollow of his shoulders - a love bite. Junsu is the one who is covered in sweat, but Yunho feels like he is drowning.

“No,” he shakes his head. “Keep practicing.”

Just you.

poor Yun, kinda sad that he and Junsu are not together in a way. But I love LOVE how you portray Junsu. He really is the one that can fly and move away without holding to anyone. Just look at him now. He wants to keep singing, and he does that, regardless of whether the other members are going to song with him or not. He just does whatever he wants because maybe everything else doesn't matter.

All in all, I really like this story. Sublime yet beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

can I ask for a happy end HoSu/JaeSu/YooSu/MinSu from you?

it's sad that yunho is not in any intimate relationship with junsu when he is all over him. but i guess it's all from yunho - he kinda sounds cowardly here. i bet if he love junsu a lot, he will tell him coz i don't think junsu is that oblivious.

The portrayal of HoSu characters left me thinking that it was so real and I'm wondering why I see it that way.

It's like you sneaked into Yunho's head, observed and suffered with him. In real life Yunho also seems to be
the "holding back" type, not wanting to burden anyone with what he really feels, so it makes sense that
the way you wrote him down is so natural.

Great read, Honey!
